About Me

Hi! I’m Brandi, an environmental journalist in West Texas, regularly contributing to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, Austin American-Statesman, Abilene Reporter News, San Angelo Standard Times, and Amarillo Globe News.

Professional Career

Throughout my career, I’ve been honored to receive bylines in some of the most influential media outlets in the country.

For nearly three years, I had the privilege of reporting for The Dallas Morning News, where I contributed to the DMN Local project and prioritized in-depth coverage over civil rights issues, including the death of a Black inmate with schizophrenia in Collin County Jail, a school district’s book challenge that sparked controversy over critical race theory, and racism in the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention, in addition to political extremism, including a series about a Frisco pastor’s far-right political rhetoric and the details of a local realtor’s participation in the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection, subsequent criminal charges and arrest.

I also have bylines in USA TODAY, Texas Highways, Fort Worth Magazine, Houston Chronicle, San Francisco Chronicle, San Antonio Express-News and Texas Climate News among several others. I’ve received citations in The New York Times, HuffPost, CNN, FOX News, The Today Show and CBS News.

Academic Background

In May 2023, I completed my master’s degree from New York University, where I honed my craft in science and environmental writing and received the faculty’s unanimous nomination as the recipient of the Professional Writing Impact Award for the 2023 graduating class.

I received my Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Texas Tech University in 2018.

Beyond Reporting

In addition to my journalistic endeavors, I'm committed to nurturing the talents and voices of tomorrow's storytellers. I am an adjunct faculty member at Texas Tech University, where I have the privilege of guiding the next generation of aspiring journalists as an instructor in the field and as co-advisor for the Hub@TTU, the College of Media and Communication’s online student newspaper.

Leadership and Advocacy

With a passion for communications, I serve on the board of the Association of Women Communicators in Lubbock as the Vice President of Communications, striving to empower and amplify the voices of women in the field. I'm also proud to serve as an editor for the Society of Environmental Journalists, allowing me to further engage with the community and contribute to the important conversations surrounding environmental issues.

Additionally, I regularly contribute on the voting committee of the SPJ Mark of Excellence Awards.
